Creating a workspace in your bedroom without intruding on your peaceful sleep sanctuary can be quite challenging. With the shift to work from home, a 2024 Remote Work Housing Survey found that 38% of those working remotely are working out of their bedroom. What’s more, the overwhelming majority of them (72% to be exact) have difficulty with the separation of work-life/sleep balance.
That’s where we come in; whether you’re looking for a computer desk or a simple smaller writing desk to fit this space, we find that most people still want extra storage to tuck everything away (almost like you were never working there) with a minimalist design.
That’s a big ask, but we have learned a lot over the years from personal experience plus the experiences of others and we have accumulated that knowledge – both what has worked and what hasn’t – for you in this article.
We have had our own bedroom home office and so we pull on our own personal experience, what some of the struggles were, and what had a big impact.
Planning Your Bedroom Home Office Workspace
Essential Measurements
It’s not just about fitting a piece of furniture into bedroom as we found out. If you want to ensure that you’ll get the most out of your workspace, you need to think about having enough space for what you need. Ergonomics expert Dr. Sarah Chen recommends these minimum measurements for comfort:
- Desk depth: 20-24 inches for laptop setup
- Desk width: 32-36 inches for monitor and supplies
- Height: 28-30 inches for proper posture
- Knee clearance: Minimum 24 inches
- Chair movement area: 24-inch radius
We highly recommend using painter’s tape to mark the dimensions on your floor before purchasing anything. This simple step saves countless headaches and costly returns.
Location Strategies
If possible, these are generally the best spots for your desk, ranked by effectiveness:
- Near a window because of natural light benefits: Home Office Lighting Ideas: Expert Tips & Best Practices
- Corner setup to maximizes space your space and help with cable management
- Foot of your bed because it can create separation between your sleeping and working areas
- Closet conversion if you have room and don’t need the room because your workspace can be hidden and tucked away
- Door-adjacent tends to be ideal for small rooms
Certain desks are designed to fit well in tight corners and they are generally better for storage underneath one of the sides making them ideal for a small room.
Avoid These Placement Mistakes:
- Facing your bed
- Blocking air vents
- Too close to radiators or heaters
- Blocking natural pathways
- Direct sunlight on your screen
The Best Desk Types for Bedrooms:
Secretary Desks ($200-350)
These are a top option for style-conscious individuals. Additional benefits: can find some that close to hide your work, many have built-in storage, there are lots of styles to potentially match your bedroom furniture, and these have a small footprint.
Drawbacks: limited workspace (isn’t that kind of the point though), and they are generally priced higher than alternatives.
Wall-Mounted/Floating Desks ($120-180)
These desks are great for tiny bedrooms because they can fold away when they’re not in use to take up very little, or even zero, floor space. Some of them have above desk storage or open shelves and you can get some with a modern look if that fits in your bedroom.
Drawbacks: there is some installation required and because they are fixed to the wall, you’ll want to watch weight limits. Plus they are small so you have a limited surface area.
Corner Desks ($150-250)
If you have the space, these corner or l shaped desks are our go to. Benefits: you get to maximize your corner area with more desk surface area, you can usually fit multiple monitors, and they don’t intrude too much.
Drawbacks: however, they do take up more space than the ones we have discussed previously and you’re typically limited to putting them in a corner, and not elsewhere, which might not fit with your particular bedroom.
Adjustable Standing Desks ($300-500)
These tend to be bigger than wall-mounted/floating or secretary desks, but if you are health conscious, you should start your search here. Benefits: most have electronic height adjustments with memory settings, are great for your well-being – see: POST and many come with usb ports which are quite handy.
Drawbacks: these tend to be a bit pricey for good quality ones and you’ll need a power source close by if you get one that is electronic.
Gaming Desks ($200-400)
Again, if you have the space, these are essentially oversized tabletops for a bigger work surface and come with other accessories like a headphone hook, two USB ports, ergonomic support, and more. You just might not have any room left.
Laptop Desks ($100-200)
Getting back to the small sizes, these are quite compact in design and many have other features like sliding keyboard shelves, making them a good option for a home business.
Drawbacks: you’ll only have a limited surface area and not much in the way of storage options.
Computer Desks ($150-300)
Now we get down to the title of the article – these are great if you need a lot of functionality since they come in numerous sizes so you don’t have to be sacrificing style, they often have a lot of storage options, yet they’re good in small spaces.
Drawbacks: be mindful of measurements since some can be bulky and come at a higher price point.
Essential Features to Look for in a Small Computer Desk
When selecting a small computer desk for your bedroom, it’s important to consider what features will maximize your functionality without overwhelming your space. Here are the essential features to look for:
- Compact Size: Choose a desk that fits comfortably in your space so it doesn’t dominate your room (especially in a bedroom). You want to find a good balance, which is why taping out the floorplan is helpful
- Ample Room: make sure the desk provides enough surface area to hold your computer, monitor, notepads, and other items. Ideally your new desk can hold everything you need comfortably to keep you organized without feeling cramped
- Storage Options: Look for desks with built-in storage solutions like drawers, shelves, or cabinets to help keep your workspace organized and free of clutter yet have everything at your fingertips if needed
- Ergonomic Design: you want your desk to feel good and promote good posture, especially if you’ll be working long hours. A standing desk or one with adjustable height settings are ideal for long work days
- Cable Management: A desk with built-in cable management features, especially for a computer desk for your bedroom, is a wise decision to keep everything tidy
- Durability: if you budget allows, get a great quality desk made from durable materials that can hold the test of time. Investing a little more now will probably save you much more later and will allow you to get a piece that looks great
- Style: don’t sacrifice style for functionality; get one that fits your personal aesthetic and complements your bedroom decor. There are so many options these days that we’re confident you can find something that works!
Remember, a bedroom workspace doesn’t have to detract from the room, it can enhance it!
Desk Chair Ideas for your Bedroom
Selecting the right desk chair is just as important as choosing the perfect desk. It needs to fit your space, room aesthetics, and be comfortable for long stretches. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Comfort: you want to be comfortable, first and foremost. You can have the most stylish chair but if you can’t use it when you need, what use is it? Some features like adjustable height, lumbar support, and breathable fabric or mesh are nice, but bedroom chairs can also be more of a statement piece
- Ergonomic Design: an ergonomic chair should solve the comfort piece above, and help your posture to reduce neck and back strain. If it works, search for a chair with an ergonomic design
- Adjustability: this is a nice to have, but not a necessity. Some adjustable features are armrests, tilt, and recline, but I’m sure you already knew that
- Durability: you’re going to be on this for long stretches, so get a good quality chair made from high-quality, durable materials that can hold up to all of your use. A durable chair is definitely a worthwhile investment
- Style: your bedroom decor is imprortant in choosing the style of chair you get. Note that many non-traditional office chairs have many or all of the features above
- Space-Saving: for a bedroom, look for a chair with a compact design or a foldable option that can save you space, especially in a small bedroom. A space-saving chair will make your workspace functional without your bedroom feeling crowded
By keeping these considerations in mind, you can find a desk chair that enhances your comfort and productivity while fitting seamlessly into your bedroom setup.
